The Truth About Lawn Care Myths

A thick, healthy green lawn in a residential yard — the kind of result every homeowner wants

Every homeowner in Fort Wayne and Marion has heard at least one of these. Bag your clippings. Cut it short so you mow less. Throw on more fertilizer. They sound reasonable. Some of them have been repeated for decades. But the turf scientists at Purdue, Michigan State, and Iowa State have tested these ideas — and most of them are flat wrong.

Here are six of the biggest lawn care myths we hear from customers, and what the research actually says.

Myth 1: Grass Clippings Cause Thatch

This is probably the most stubborn myth in lawn care. The logic seems simple: clippings pile up on the grass, and that must be what creates thatch. So you should bag everything to keep your lawn healthy.

Purdue Extension's "Don't Bag It" program (AY-2-W) tackled this head-on. Grass clippings are about 80 to 85 percent water. They break down quickly — often within a week or two — and actually return nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil. Purdue's mowing and dethatching guide (AY-8-W) explains that thatch is a tightly woven layer of dead stems, roots, and rhizomes, not fresh clippings.

The University of Minnesota turf program put it bluntly: clippings decompose too fast to contribute to thatch. The real causes of thatch buildup are excessive fertilization, poor soil biology, and certain grass varieties that produce heavy stolons and rhizomes.

So bagging clippings is extra work for no benefit. It removes nutrients you would otherwise get for free. Over a season, Purdue estimates that returning clippings can provide up to 25 percent of your lawn's nitrogen needs.

Myth 2: Mow It Short So You Mow Less Often

We hear this one all the time. The idea is that if you scalp the lawn down, it takes longer to grow back and you get a break from mowing. It makes sense in theory. In practice, it is one of the worst things you can do.

Purdue's Maintenance Calendar for Indiana Lawns (AY-27-W) recommends mowing cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass at 3 to 3.5 inches through most of the season. Why so tall? Because grass blades are solar panels. Taller grass captures more sunlight, which feeds deeper root growth. Shorter grass means shallower roots, less drought tolerance, and more room for weeds to take hold.

There is also the one-third rule: never remove more than one-third of the blade height in a single mowing. Cutting more than that shocks the plant. It forces the grass to spend its energy regrowing blades instead of building roots. Purdue, Michigan State, and Ohio State all back this standard.

Short cutting might save you one mowing this month. But by midsummer, you will have a weaker, thinner lawn that is more expensive to fix. We see the results of this across Fort Wayne and Marion every July — lawns that looked fine in May but fell apart when the heat hit.

Myth 3: More Fertilizer Means Greener Grass

If a little fertilizer is good, a lot must be better, right? This one gets homeowners into real trouble.

Purdue's guide to fertilizing established lawns (AY-22-W) lays out specific nitrogen rates for cool-season grasses: generally 2 to 4 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year, spread across multiple applications. Go over that and you are asking for problems.

Too much nitrogen causes what the industry calls fertilizer burn. The salts in the product pull moisture out of the grass, leaving brown, crispy streaks wherever the product piled up. But even if you do not see burn, over-fertilization causes subtler damage. It pushes fast, weak top growth at the expense of root development. It accelerates thatch buildup. And it makes the lawn more vulnerable to disease and insects.

There is also an environmental cost. Excess nitrogen that the grass cannot absorb runs off into storm drains and waterways. Purdue and other land-grant universities have documented this as a real contributor to water quality problems across the Midwest.

This is one of the biggest reasons we calibrate every fertilizer application to the lawn we are treating. The rate, the timing, and the product all matter. Getting it right takes measurement and experience — not just enthusiasm.

Myth 4: You Should Water a Little Every Day

Daily watering sounds like it keeps your lawn happy. In reality, it trains your grass to be weak.

Iowa State Extension explains that frequent shallow watering encourages roots to stay near the surface where the moisture is. When a dry spell hits, those shallow roots cannot reach deeper water. The lawn dries out fast.

Purdue and Michigan State both recommend about one inch of water per week, including rainfall, delivered in one or two deep soakings. Deep watering pushes moisture down into the root zone, which tells the roots to grow deeper to reach it. A lawn with deep roots handles heat and drought far better than one that has been babied with daily sprinkles.

The best time to water is early morning — between 5 and 9 a.m. — when evaporation is low and the grass has time to dry before evening. Watering at night keeps the blades wet for hours, which is an open invitation for fungal disease.

Myth 5: Brown Grass in Summer Is Dead Grass

When the July heat settles over northeast Indiana and your lawn turns brown, the first instinct is panic. But brown does not always mean dead.

Michigan State's Summer Lawn Care guide (E3180) explains that cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass naturally go dormant when daytime temperatures stay above 85 degrees for extended periods. The grass stops growing and turns brown to conserve energy and water. It is not dying. It is waiting.

A dormant lawn looks uniformly brown and the grass feels dry but not brittle. The roots and crowns are still alive. When cooler temperatures and rain return in late August or September, the lawn greens back up — often within a couple of weeks.

Iowa State Extension notes that a healthy lawn can survive four to six weeks of drought-induced dormancy without permanent damage. The key is to not make things worse while the lawn is dormant. Avoid heavy foot traffic. Do not fertilize — nitrogen pushes tender growth at exactly the wrong time. And if you water, commit to it consistently. Watering once and then stopping forces the grass out of dormancy and back in, which is harder on the plant than just staying dormant.

When customers call us worried about brown lawns in July, we walk them through this every time. Most of the time, the answer is patience. If it is something else — disease or insect damage — the pattern looks different, and that is where a trained eye makes the difference.

Myth 6: Fall Is When Lawn Care Winds Down

A lot of homeowners think that once the leaves start changing, lawn season is over. Put the mower away, forget about the grass, and see you in spring. That is one of the most expensive myths on this list.

Iowa State Extension calls late summer and early fall "the most important time of the year" for cool-season lawns. Purdue's maintenance calendar agrees. September and October are when cool-season grasses shift from summer survival into active root growth. The soil is still warm, the air temperatures are cooler, and rain usually picks back up. That combination creates the best growing conditions of the entire year.

Fall is the ideal window for core aeration and overseeding. It is the best time for broadleaf weed control, because weeds are pulling nutrients down into their roots for winter — and herbicide goes with it. And the last fertilizer application of the season, often called a winterizer, feeds root growth that carries the lawn through winter and into a stronger spring green-up.

Skip fall lawn care and you are starting over in spring with a thinner, weaker lawn and a head start for weeds. That is the pattern we see year after year across Fort Wayne and Marion — the lawns that look best in June are the ones that got serious attention the previous September.

Why Myths Stick Around

Most of these myths started with a grain of logic. They just did not have the science to back them up. And since lawns are slow to show damage, a bad practice can go on for years before the consequences catch up.
